• The Trench Coat Reimagined for Autumn/Winter 2026

Autumn/Winter 2026 animal-print fashion collage featuring a zebra\-print coat alongside leopard and spotted belted coats in warm brown and black tonesReimagined trench coats for Autumn/Winter 2026 are moving beyond the familiar beige wardrobe staple. If you are looking to elevate your Autumn wardrobe, my advice as a stylist is simple: look beyond the traditional beige trench. A classic trench will always have its place, but if you want to elevate your autumn wardrobe, this is the season to explore more dramatic silhouettes, richer textures and unexpected prints.

Rather than treating your trench as a practical layer that simply completes an outfit, consider choosing one that becomes the outfit.

    Look for a Strong Silhouette

The first thing I would consider is shape. A beautifully cinched waist can create definition, while exaggerated sleeves, asymmetric panels and sweeping lengths bring drama to even the simplest look.

If your wardrobe is mostly neutral, a sculptural trench is an easy way to add interest without introducing a bold colour or print. Style it with a fine knit, straight-leg trousers and pointed boots, allowing the coat’s silhouette to take centre stage.

Experiment With TextureAutumn/Winter 2026 jacquard trend featuring three models in long floral brocade coats in black, mauve and camel.

Jacquard, brocade and embossed finishes give the trench a richer, more luxurious quality. These textures can make a familiar silhouette feel entirely new, especially when combined with floral motifs, contrasting panels or a statement belt.

For an elegant approach, choose a jacquard trench in muted olive, mauve, camel or black. Keep everything underneath streamlined so the texture remains the focus.

Consider Print and ColourAutumn/Winter 2026 leather outerwear collage featuring long burgundy, chocolate-brown and olive-green leather coats with belted, waist-defining silhouettes.

If you are ready to make more of a statement, look towards animal print. Leopard, zebra and spotted patterns bring confidence to autumn outerwear and work particularly well with simple black or chocolate-brown separates.

Leather is another strong option. Burgundy, deep olive and rich brown feel sophisticated while offering a refreshing alternative to the traditional cotton trench. A leather version with a defined waist is especially useful for creating a polished, elongated silhouette.

Choose the Right Trench for Your Wardrobe

My styling advice is to choose the element that feels most natural to you. If bold print feels too much, begin with an unexpected texture or colour. If you already wear statement pieces confidently, explore exaggerated shapes, intricate jacquard or a full animal-print coat.

The goal is not to abandon the classic trench completely. It is to find a version that adds personality, polish and impact to the clothes you already own.
